Not quite right

We picked up a pair of (toy) binoculars at the zoo over the weekend. My little guy is trying to figure them out. I guess it does seem more intuitive to look through the larger end, doesn't it?

Birthday party season is back

bouncy house 5
Several kids in M's class have summer birthdays, which makes this time of year popular for parties. Recently, three girls in his class had a shared party (great idea, in my opinion) at a bouncy house play center, and the boys had a blast. It was actually the second time we've been there, and they added a larger obstacle course and slide, which everyone loved. I think you probably get to pick what bouncy structures you want, based on the age of the children attending.

We're thinking about having a party for the boys this year (combined, since their birthdays are only a few weeks apart). I don't think they'll mind sharing it, since they've never had a party before. This bouncy house place is definitely a possibility since they had so much fun there, and because the event is outsourced, it means less work for us (I am on a tough rotation that month). I'll just have to see if it fits our budget (probably not, but I'll take a look anyway). The alternate plan is to have a barbeque or something of that nature either at home or at a local park.

A visit with Corduroy

Sadly, I missed this event since I was on on call. But Corduroy visited a local bookstore and the boys went to see him. I believe M is trying to tickle him. And A is being his skeptical self.

Learning about jazz

jazz concert
We were fortunate enough to hear about a free jazz concert specifically targeted towards young children, with the intention of introducing traditional jazz music and instruments to the kids. It was kind of a blur for me, since I was still on my critical care month and had no sense of time or day for the most part. Most weekend days I was off (and I typically only had one day off per week), we hung out at home or went to the local park, just so I could take it easy. But this event was local and while I was still in somewhat of a daze from being monumentally sleep-deprived, I do remember enjoying this event quite a bit.

Sitting there with A in my lap, watching him clap to the music and seeing M completely mesmerized by all the musical instruments was definitely a highlight of my month. Not to mention listening to some incredibly talented jazz musicians too. The moment it started, I realized I should have called all my friends to come (sorry guys!), but because it was kind of last-minute, and I've been slow to address my email and keep up with staying in touch with everyone, the opportunity came and went all too quickly. I'll be sure to send out a short note the next time I hear about something like this.

Summertime fun

We've had a fun time playing catch with these little gloves (complete with velcro balls) we found at a local toy store.

In the second photo, the kids are blowing bubbles (that's their new activity whenever we grab coffee on the weekends).

It's official

We finally got around to downloading photos off the camera and here's one from graduation a little while ago. It was a long day for everyone, especially the kids. But it's official now. My preschooler called me Dr. Mommy the other day. I don't think I'll ever get used to being called Dr. anything.

Intern year has actually started (orientation at least) and I am on call my very first day and whole first weekend. This is a q4 month, which kind of stinks, so we'll see if I can keep these posts up.

I don't know if anyone else does this (or if we are a totally bizarre family), but sometimes we pretend to eat the children and vice versa.

Making pizza - Part III

Let me preface this with the explanation that the only pizza toppings we had in the fridge (that the boys would eat) were sausage, hot dogs, and cheddar-jack blend cheese. Fortunately, we've since stocked up on some groceries.

Three years ago today

Sometimes it's hard to find a photo that was taken exactly one, two or three years ago. Believe it or not, there were many days where we didn't take any photos. People always remark at how we have so many pictures of the kids. While it's a total pain to carry around the camera, I wouldn't trade anything (except maybe to go back in time) for all the wonderful shots of the boys we have.

Times I wish I had a camera in my eye

Not long after our first baby was born, my husband remarked to me how he wished he had a camera in his eye. We laughed about it, but there have been many times I've felt that way. Pretty much on a daily basis now that I think about it. That's why we don't hesitate to pull out the camera, even though it's quite bulky to carry around.

For example, several weeks ago when I picked up the boys from daycare, my toddler had some confetti streamers stuck to the bottom of his shoes (they were inside all day because of rain, and it looked like a birthday party had exploded in their room). His brother thought this was hilarious, and started trying to grab them. This started a game of chase, with my toddler running down the sidewalk with confetti streamers flapping in the wind behind him, like tassels on bike handlebars, except on his shoes. It was a really funny moment I wish I could have captured on film.

Another time, while my husband was getting the bath ready, my toddler wandered into the kitchen (I usually prepare dinner during their baths). He only had his diaper on, and was fascinated by the fridge, which I had just opened. He held open the door with one hand, and I guess he must've been itchy, because he started scratching his bottom with his other hand, pushing down his diaper and partially mooning me in the process. It was a total stereotypical construction worker/plumber moment that would have been awesome on film.

Here's a photo series of the boys playing with their box of various musical instruments.

Cheap thrill: Bubbles

On the last morning of our trip to Hawaii, we wanted to take it easy with the kids, but at the same time, let them burn some energy before boarding the plane for the flight home. This was successfully accomplished with some inexpensive bubble-blowing toys we had purchased while we were there.

Despite only costing a few dollars (~$3 each), these things were pretty awesome. Sometimes it can be hard for my kids to adequately blow bubbles with those little wands than come in the bottles of soap solution. Powered with a single AA battery (included with the toy), these blowers provided plenty of energy to blow hundreds of bubbles in a fairly short period of time.

You guessed it - sofa jumping in Hawaii

hawaii sofa 3
This is a photo-heavy post, but I couldn't find just one or two photos that captured the fun the boys were having. These were taken in Hawaii, after a hot and humid morning outdoors.

We retreated to the comfort of air-conditioning (plus I think the boys were due for a nap, although I can't quite remember if that ever happened). They spent a decent amount of time leaping off the sofa while I put together a quick snack, and we were all very entertained by this particular activity.

Every time they jumped, my heart would skip a beat because they just kept getting braver and jumping higher and farther. Fortunately, they never jumped on top of each other, or at the same time. Otherwise we would have had some bumped heads for sure.

Just look at how happy they are.

"Smile"

This is the look I got when I asked my preschooler to "smile" during dinner in Hawaii. He's holding the toy submarine we picked up at the Waikiki aquarium. What a silly guy. Maybe he should be wearing this tee.

Planes on planes

As expected, my three-year-old loved being on the airplane. He listened carefully to all the pilot's announcements and was very strict about keeping his seat belt on. We brought along some toy planes for him to play with (including one that matched our own flight), which he enjoyed very much as you can see below. He was pretty easy to handle on the plane, and was kept busy with a bunch of toys and a couple of dvds (which he watched on my husband's laptop).

He had a couple of stubborn moments in the airport on the way back home, where he refused to walk or sit in the stroller and insisted on being carried or staying where he was to watch the airplanes. Normally, I don't mind picking him up, since walking through the airport as a toddler must be pretty tiring. But with all our carry-on stuff, it was impossible to do. He nearly had a full meltdown in the airport (a rare event, but always seems to happen in the most crowded and busiest of places). Eventually, after a stern talk about behaving, he relented and quickly went back to being his normal self. As a whole, traveling with him was much easier than I had expected. Keeping his little brother busy was challenging, but I'll write more about that later.

Nice to be home

Well, we survived! And of course, I think we all had a good time (especially the kids). We just dropped off the boys at daycare and picked up my laptop, and I am now going to attack the mess that used to be the living room floor (luggage, laundry, mail, toys) and I think my husband is going to take a much-needed nap.

We deleted the blurry/bad photos off the camera, and have over 400 remaining to download. Of those, I think maybe a hundred or so are some real winners, some of which I will try to format and post over the next few days.

Here are a few that I emailed my mom today. I'll be back soon to post more about our trip. For those of you who were curious, it was helpful to have the carseat (for my little guy) on the plane, and no, it does not fit through the xray machine at the airport (we have the Britax Decathlon). They have to check it manually.
